Terms and conditions

The CAFC operates pursuant to a joint management team structure consisting of representatives of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and the Competition Bureau Canada. The goals include the provision of support to municipal and provincial law enforcement and other regulatory and private sector agencies with respect to the national collection of fraud complaint data.

Information collected and stored automatically

The RCMP, which operates and manages the online web reporting tool and database, uses the data collected at this website for statistical and intelligence purposes. Data relative to your submission may be forwarded to the appropriate authorized agency or entity for review and potential action. When visiting the site the application may automatically collect and store the following data whether or not you file a complaint:

Use and Disclosure of Information

The RCMP and the CAFC use the data voluntarily submitted by complainants to this website to help victims of fraud. Reports, should the user choose to submit one, are maintained and controlled by the RCMP and the CAFC. Thereafter, staff at the RCMP or the CAFC may pursue preliminary inquiries, and information from the report, along with other information developed, may be referred to a federal, provincial, state or local law enforcement or regulatory agency or investigative body, as appropriate, including but not limited to, the RCMP, the OPP, the Bureau, the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation or the U.S. Federal Trade Commission.

Information solicited by the web application on the complaint form assists authorized personnel in processing your report. Disclosure of such data is strictly governed under user consent however, failure to provide certain information solicited will result in the report not being processed. Data from incomplete reports will still be stored and remains accessible to the report filer. Users who voluntarily choose to file a report do so knowing that all information provided will be disseminated to one or more user selected agencies. Recipients may, or may not, take action on the report.

The web application does not decide which reports will be actively investigated by any agency and the CAFC, and its partners, cannot make any representations or guarantees as to the action that may, or may not, be taken on any report. The web application does not store any report status data other than the report that has been transmitted and the specific date.

To file a report online, a user must provide contact data and create an account made up of an Account and a Password. The account and password are private to the user filing the report. The protection of this account and password is the user's responsibility. If a website user does not provide the minimum registration identification data, the user will be unable to proceed further and log a report. To successfully log a report there must be a legitimate Canadian investigative component present.

If the user forgets their account and password information, an e-mail address must be provided so that the account and "password hint" will be sent via e-mail to the appropriate user.

All data entered is considered part of a report and will be stored in a database and may be shared with other enforcement agencies with the consent of the user.

Personal identifying information about the user is collected to aid authorized investigators. All data submitted through the online application is treated as police information.
