Card-not-present fraud can happen when a business accepts orders over the phone, online or by email.
Scammers use stolen credit cards to order products or services. They ask for urgent shipping, so they can receive the order before the card owner discovers the charge.
When the card owner disputes the charge, the business must reimburse the amount charged on the stolen card.
Variation: Overcharge request
In a variation of Card-not-present fraud, a scammer provides a credit card and asks the business to charge extra on the card. They then ask the business to return those funds (to pay for shipping of goods).
By doing so, scammers turn stolen credit cards into cash.
