Fraud tip: keep your devices up to date

This week's bulletin highlights that keeping your devices up to date is one of the most effective ways to prevent identity theft and identity fraud in the cyber environment. Fraudsters exploit weaknesses in old operating systems, browsers, and apps to steal personal information. Once they have your data, they can impersonate you to commit fraud by opening new accounts, applying for credit or accessing government benefits in your name.

How to protect yourself

Remember! Keeping your devices up to date is one of the easiest ways to stop identity theft before it happens. A few minutes spent on updates today can save you months of stress if your identity is stolen tomorrow.

Anyone who suspects they have been the victim of cybercrime or fraud should report it to their local police and to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre's online reporting system or by phone at 1-888-495-8501. Even if you're not a victim, you should still report the incident to the CAFC.
